Bio4Safe – Business Model for offshore seaweed cultivation

As part of the 2 seas Interreg Bio4safe project, the Noordzeeboerderij and Seaweed Platform member Green Giraffe are collaborating in developing a business model for offshore seaweed cultivation in the North Sea. The model can review the viability of various types of commercial seaweed value chains, and therewith help you to improve your business proposition. By highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of a value chain setup at an early stage we aim at easing the start and run of a (more) successful business with locally cultivated seaweeds.
With this model, the viability of various types of commercial seaweed value chains can be reviewed, for value chains based on seaweed farms in wind parks on our North Sea. This can then be used to support platform members in developing seaweed value chain; The model can highlight strengths and weaknesses in their setup at an early stage. This will help to improve their business proposition so that it will hopefully become easier to start and to run a more successful business with locally cultivated seaweeds.
Currently, the model is focused on the applications biostimulants and food, for which we have gathered first-hand market and process insights from various stakeholders and members of the Seaweed Platform. However, the business model can also be expanded/modified to include any other type of application such as feed additives, medicines, cosmetics, commodities, etc. So, if you want to know what your business case will look like when you base it on locally and sustainably cultivated North Sea seaweeds, then just let us know and we can discuss how we can help you with this model!
